The Seagaia Ocean Dome

The Seagaia Ocean Dome

The Seagaia Ocean Dome was an incredible wave-pool located in Miyazaki, Japan. It was located indoors as a part of the Sheraton Seagaia Resort. The indoor pool was 300 meters long and 100 meters wide, making the Seagaia Ocean Dome so large the pool made it into the Guinness World Records! The Dome was the largest indoor waterpark in the world with many unique features. However, the Seagaia Ocean Dome closed on October 1, 2007 due to reorganization and rebranding of the Sheraton Seagaia Resort.

When in business, the Seagaia Ocean Dome gathered around 1.25 million visitors per year. The Dome had a roof that was created in 4 sections and was retractable. Having a retractable roof added a feature to the Dome, allowing visitors the experience of being outside while swimming inside.  Another popular feature of the Seagaia Ocean Dome was a volcano that spouted ‘flames’.  The Dome had fake sand made to appear genuine to offer the look and feel of a traditional ocean experience.  The retractable roof resembled a blue sky, so that even on a rainy, stormy day, the indoor pool offered the experience of sunny, clear skies.

The Seagaia Ocean Dome was definitely unique in experience and brought in a large number of visitors each year. However, the Dome was built near a real ocean, with real sand, real weather, and real waves.  During the rebranding of the resort, the developers needed to take into account the sustainability of the Dome given that the Dome was a man-made ocean that may lose its appeal over time. The Seagaia Ocean Dome needed to close despite being a unique and record breaking water park, but the Dome set a new standard of design and enjoyment of water parks.
